It's been eleven months since we drove that loaded down U-Haul from sunshining beaches to narrow city streets bathed with seemingly endless rain. We filled our living space with the things that we needed, and made it into a home with the things that we loved.
Little did we know that we were joining a community. Possibly the truest community of our lives. No fences to separate. No ownership of property. Just sharing with the neighbours, daily talking with the neighbours. Learning their stories, where they came from, what they dream of.
The doorbell rings and children want to play. I hear squeals of girlfriend delight as I work in the kitchen ~ one lively girl from India, a quiet girl from Chile, another from South Korea and her best friend from China. They come together and play - daily - just to be together is a gift for them, it seems.
Last week I took coffee to my sandbox friend from Bangledash. Travis practices Korean greetings with the neighbours with whom we share a wall. We spontaneously feasted on a prepared Indian meal with the most beautiful people who give, give and give some more.
All this mosiac of giving and sharing, within a close proximity.
All this, because we packed up that U-Haul one day last September...
